Standard of care is defined as the degree of care that a reasonable and prudent dentist would exercise under the same or similar circumstances. A dentist who fails to meet the standard of care for any part of a dental treatment and who causes injury as a result can be found liable for negligence. Standards vary from one jurisdiction to another.

And finally you have to apply those results when making decisions about your patient. This means being able to integrate the evidence with your patients personal needs, their values and beliefs and their wishes. Evidence-based practice is the conscientious explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in helping individual patients make decisions about their care in the light of their personal values and beliefs.
