Please contact us with any questions. Conducting critiques is an important part of teaching art. Critiques teach higher order thinking skills, get students interacting with one another and help students receive authentic feedback from both their peers and their teachers. Here are a few strategies to get kids interested, get them comfortable, and get them talking. My sandwich consists of bread compliment , meat constructive criticism , and more bread another compliment.
This gives us a positive start and positive end to our comments, but still allows for some suggestions for improvement. When summer projects come back, we usually have a few good, a few bad, and a few in between. Same with figure drawings at the beginning of the year. So when we do our critiques, we focus on projects that are less than successful. I like to have my kids Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Maybe the composition is a better with a couple inches cut off the paper, or perhaps a certain part needs to be erased—just taking a little part away to make the piece better.
Lastly, Recycle is nothing more than taking the worst project directly to the recycling bin. These ideas are all great ways to get your students engaged with the critique process. If you have a particularly tough crowd or are wanting even more in-depth information, be sure to check out the Critiques at Every Level PRO Learning Pack. This is a great critique for the beginning of the year. Kids are usually pretty apprehensive about the critique itself, and some kids are deathly afraid of anything bad being said about their artwork.
First, schedule a meeting, and hear him out. Are you sure his criticism isn't valid? If he does on balance make sense, then cede the point, and adjust your approach appropriately. If you remain convinced that her criticisms fall wide of the mark, and she persists in making them, try graciously, through one-on-one meetings, to bring her round to your view.
Failing that, you might request a meeting with someone higher up the ladder. In doing so, though, recognize that you risk undermining your position further. Again, make your case as calmly and rationally as possible. Providing you and your boss both keep in mind the goals of the team, rather than your personal or professional differences, you should be able to agree on a positive way forward. Rational discourse really is the best antidote to unfair criticism. More often than not, it wins out in the corporate world, providing the people involved are open and willing to finding the best course.
Being subjected to unfair criticism can easily be a bruising experience, however well you handle your critic. So it's important that you don't let the experience damage your self-esteem or self-confidence. The main thing to remember is that we're talking about unfair criticism here rather than constructive feedback.
Sometimes the criticism is unfair because it's simply incorrect. And on other occasions, it's unfair because it's about something that has no bearing on how you do your job.

Either way, remember that it indicates shortcomings in your critic rather in you. Instead, manage the immediate situation by remaining calm, getting your critic to repeat the comments and then clarifying that you understand them. You may spot that the criticism is based on a misunderstanding or a different perspective, in which case it is reasonably straightforward to iron this out.
In more complicated situations, particularly when your critic is your boss, you will need to schedule an "offline" meeting to discuss the criticism. A frail old man, unable to remember things, stumbling, refusing to answer basic questions…I said it in and Mueller confirmed it today — All you pundits and moderates and lame Dems who told the public to put their faith in the esteemed Robert Mueller — just STFU from now on. To think that Robert Mueller should be the main actor in the drama was always misplaced casting. This was not and should not have been about him. This is about the rule of law. This is about the separation of powers. Did Robert Mueller act as the matinee idol or the central galvanizing figure of that drama?
